Santorini : Archaeological
Sites |
Since the first inhabitants
arrived on 'Strogili' (one of the many different names
for Santorini - it means 'The Round One') around 3000
BC and the first pre-historic settlements were created,
Santorini has become a haven for archaeologists and
history lovers.
The first traces came to light in 1860, and 10 years
later the French archaeologists H. Gorgeix and H. Mamet
began excavations at the mines of Thirassia and subsequently
in Akrotiri on Santorini island itself.
Their efforts were continued in 1896 by Baron Hilier
von Gaertrinken in the area of Mesa Vouno, which revealed
evidence of settlement as early as 9th century BC
In 1967 a team headed by Spiros Marinatos revealed
the Late Minoan City of Akrotiri, the center of a major
Aegean civilisation of the mid 16th century BC
Excavations continue till the present day, and many
of the artifacts have been housed in the various museums
on the island ... |

The second important period
in the history of Santorini is linked with the city of
Ancient Thira. The excavation was begun in 1896 by Baron
Hiller von Gaertringen in the area of Mesa Vouno ... |
