Santorini Civil Weddings : Required Documents


An application for a civil marriage
will be made to the Mayor which you will sign it after your arrival.
Bride's and Groom's passports
Till you arrive with the original, copies of the name and photo page can be sent by fax.
Original Birth Certificates for both parties
Bride & Groom and an authenticated translation of those records in Greek.
Certificate of Non-Impediment for both parties
Bride and Groom (e.g. minor under 18 years of age, un-dissolved existing marriage). These must be dated 3 months or less before the wedding date. and an authenticated translation of those records in Greek or Marriage License and Registration of marriage (authenticated translation in Greek is required also).
Divorce Certificate(s)
if any, as well as the authenticated translation in Greek.
All above documents must be officially translated in Greek
Translation into Greek and approval of the translation can be done at your local Greek Consulate.
Authenticated Copies
of the original documents and authenticated copies of the official translations must be forwarded or faxed to the Island's community or to your Santorini island wedding co-ordinator at least 21 days prior the ceremony.
All the original documents and the official translations
are required from the community before the ceremony. Don't forget to bring the original documents and the official translations with you in Greece. The ceremony will not take place without the original documentation.
Please Note
that documentation required has to be issued not earlier than 3 months before the wedding date otherwise it will not be acceptable by the Greek authorities.
Officially signed Marriage Certificate will normally be issued the day after the Ceremony.

Santorini Catholic Weddings : Required Documents


Baptism Certificate
This document should be requested and dated close to your wedding date.
Confirmation Certificate
Freedom to marry Certificate
This document assures that you are free from any canonical restriction for marriage.
a) These certificates must be obtained from the parish priest of whom you were baptized and have to be dated within 3 months of your marriage.
b) If the date of your confirmation is not written in the parish in which you were baptized, you should ask for it in the same parish in which you were confirmed.
c) Take these certificates to your present parish priest who should make the prenuptial inquiries and catechetical instruction.
Written permission must be obtained from your Bishop to have your marriage performed out of your parish and here in Santorini
This is according to Canon 1115 of the Codex Juris Canonici. Please discuss with your pastor.
Certificate stating you have completed the "PRE-CANA"
instruction class, retreat or meetings
Single status letter - Letter of impediment (translated & authenticated)
The above documents need to be sent to Santorini at least 2 months prior to the day of your marriage.


Santorini Greek Orthodox Weddings : Required Documents


All documents must be translated ONLY by Greek authorities
such as a Greek Consulate or Embassy (in your city or country) or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens. An independent translator with notary stamp WILL NOT BE accepted by the church. All translators should be approved by the Greek Consulate or Embassy.
From the Greek Orthodox Church, a certificate giving consent & the freedom to marry
Otherwise known as the Letter of Celibacy.
a) This document must be obtained in Greek and signed & stamped from the priest of your parish thus there should be no need for translation.
b) Validation of this document of its authenticity of the priests' signature MUST be obtained from the Bishop of the local church.
Baptismal Certificates from the Bride and Groom
a) This document must be obtained in Greek and should be signed & stamped from the priest of your parish thus there should be no need for translation.
b) Validation of this document for the authenticity of the priests' signature MUST be obtained from the Bishop of the local church.
Divorce certificate/decree (if applicable)
a) Certificate from the judge required AND from the Church if you had a previous Greek Orthodox wedding.
b) The divorce decree must be translated to Greek. Translation in Greek is only required for the page(s) that carry the court decision and not for the whole divorce settlement. (Valid only if translated by a Greek Consulate/Embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens).
You will both have to sign a paper in a notary office that your children will become Greek Orthodox (Certificate of Faith)
a) Document must be in Greek. (Valid only if translated by a Greek Consulate/Embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens).
b) This document can also be submitted here in Santorini upon your arrival.
Single status letter/Letter of No Impediment
from your local registrar's office/town hall for each of you or marriage license.
a) The letters or marriage license requires translation to Greek (Valid only if translated by a Greek Consulate/Embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens).
Additional Important Information
a) The Greek Authorities require that ALL Documents requested above (except Divorce decree) must be issued NO more than 3 months prior to the wedding date.
b) All Documents MUST be faxed at least 60 days prior to your arrival to the Island's community or to your Santorini island wedding coordinator.
c) For your safety, please send all documents by courier or registered mail ONLY.
d) Please note that for ALL Greek Orthodox weddings, the couple must be on the island at least 2 working days prior to the wedding date (to meet with priest) and stay at least 1 working day after the wedding date (to go to Santorini Town Hall).
